Inspiring spaces – to lay your head, to raise your glass, to furnish your fork, to come home to. The Artful Lodger finds them and profiles them here for your design-loving pleasure. These are spaces where amazing design is hero. Where the experience is all in the décor. Where the architecture stops the show. That’s where The Artful Lodger goes. It’s a tough gig. (Ahem.)

I’m Sally Paterson. Freelance travel writer, interiors writer, feature writer and design disciple. I’ve been writing for over a decade, and have also been diligently slogging away at design studies at ISCD. The Artful Lodger concept was conceived while on assignment from the Sydney Morning Herald to cover a jaw-dropping, knock-you-for-six hotel, the likes of which I’d never seen before (see it here). It occurred to me then and there that wherever I go, whether it’s in my local ‘hood, further afield or even just hanging at home, I want to be inspired. I want to appreciate my surroundings.

It’s not so much about opulence. It’s not even about the destination. It’s about creativity, authenticity, considered design, fascinating furniture, a clever connection with the surroundings or amazing architecture. So, the Artful Lodger only profiles hotels, eateries, bars and homes where great design is the drawcard. Enjoy.
